Determine the nature of the task
Ask yourself , and if appropriate , the other person , questions such
as the following:
What is the nature of the task ?
What steps have to be taken to address it?
What resources or information is needed?
How long will it take to complete the task?
Evaluate the commitment and competence , and completion factors
Ask yourself questions such as :
Is the person willing to complete the task?
Commitment
Does the person have the expertise to address it? If not , what does
the person have to learn? \
Competence
Does the person have the time and / or the time management skills to
actually complete the task ?
Completion
Assess the support required
Ask yourself , and, if
appropriate , the other person, questions such as the following:
What support is required by the person to handle the task on their own?
Is such support available ?
Is the person willing to accept such
support , if not , why not?
When , where, and by whom can
the support be given ?
Leave an empowered colleague with a clear task
Conclude the conversation by :
Reviewing the result of the above analysis
identifying the possible support that he or she can access
if appropriate , be sure that the person understand that it is their
responsibility to handle the task
establish a follow up report date
Delegating effectively
if a task required that you
assume responsibility for it , it is important to do so
delegating effectively is not about dumping problems on other people ,
it is about providing the support and resources that empowers people
in some cases , you may need several meetings to effectively delegate a
task , especially if you have to get resources or provide support
