L eave an empowered colleague with a clear task

Determine the nature of the task
Ask yourself , and if appropriate , the other person , questions such as the following:
What is the nature of the task ?
What steps have to be taken to address it?
What resources or information is needed?
How long will it take to complete the task?

Evaluate the commitment and competence , and completion factors
Ask yourself questions such as :
Is the person willing to complete the task?
Commitment
Does the person have the expertise to address it? If not , what does the person have to learn? \
Competence
Does the person have the time and / or the time management skills to actually complete the task ?
Completion

Assess the support required
Ask  yourself , and, if appropriate , the other person, questions such as the following:
What support is required by the person to handle the task on their own?
Is such support  available ?
Is the person willing to accept such  support , if not , why not?
When  , where, and by whom can the support be given ?

Leave an empowered colleague with a clear task
Conclude the conversation by :
Reviewing the result of the above analysis
identifying the possible support that he or she can access
if appropriate , be sure that the person understand that it is their responsibility to handle the task
establish a follow up report date

Delegating effectively
if a task required that  you assume responsibility for it , it is important to do so
delegating effectively is not about dumping problems on other people , it is about providing the support and resources that empowers people
in some cases , you may need several meetings to effectively delegate a task , especially if you have to get resources or provide support
